How to read a score. Each score rates how good or bad the news was for the company, from −10 (clearly bad) to +10 (clearly good). 0 is neutral, and anything beyond ±6 is strong and rare. It rates the coverage, not the share price.

The week in brief

Coverage of the FTSE 100 stayed positive on average for the week of Tuesday 13 October to Monday 19 October, but it softened toward the end. The daily average opened at +3.6 and closed at +2.4, with a low of +2.1 on Sunday.

These are scores of news coverage, not of the shares. Each headline gets a tone score from −10 to +10, and anything beyond ±6 is strong and rare.

The daily picture

Tuesday 13 October started at +3.6 across 95 companies. Wednesday dipped to +2.8, Thursday recovered to +3.3, and Friday fell back to +2.8. Saturday returned to +3.6 across 87 companies. Sunday was the weakest day at +2.1, though only 63 companies had coverage. Monday 19 October ended at +2.4.

The week did not trend cleanly. It rose and fell, then finished lower than it began.

Most positive coverage

Shareholder returns and deal news led the good end. Coca-Cola HBC topped the list at +8.8 across 8 relevant stories, helped by a +10.0 day on Tuesday when upgraded guidance was in focus.

Metlen Energy & Metals averaged +7.7 over 29 stories. Its best day was Wednesday 14 October (+9.2), when coverage centred on a tie-up with Thales Alenia Space and Thales Hellas on Greece's defence satellite communications system.

Lion Finance Group averaged +7.5. Its Saturday score of +10.0 came from a bigger dividend and a longer share buyback, the only relevant coverage that day. Imperial Brands (+7.1) peaked on Monday at +9.7 after launching a GBP 1.5 billion share buyback. British Land also averaged +7.1, with Sunday at +9.7 after Goldman Sachs raised its price target to 490p.

Buybacks were the most common theme overall, appearing in 12 company-days, with analyst ratings and valuation talk close behind.

Most negative coverage

Utilities dominated the weak end. Severn Trent averaged −5.0 over 20 stories. On Monday 19 October it scored −9.2, with the only relevant coverage being a report that a UK regulator had found a breach.

United Utilities averaged −4.2 over 40 stories, moving from −2.8 on the first day to −5.5 on the last. Sunday's −7.7 reflected investor reaction to scrutiny over sewage spills, with regulatory and reputational pressure behind the tone.

Fresnillo averaged −2.2, and Thursday's −4.5 came from being named among the FTSE 100 fallers. Whitbread averaged −2.1 over 82 stories, ending at −5.2 on Monday. Coverage focused on results, including a reported 9 percent profit drop, and an approaching showdown with an activist investor.

Pershing Square Holdings averaged −1.9, but had the single worst day of the week. Wednesday scored −10.0 after a BofA Securities downgrade to Underperform, with the price target cut to $38 from $54. It was a second downgrade in two days. One note said underperformance could delay the Pershing Square Ventures launch beyond the fourth quarter.

The biggest swings

Four companies moved sharply between the first and last day, all from positive to negative.

  • EasyJet: +6.8 to −3.3. On Tuesday, coverage centred on a bidding contest between Castlelake and Apollo. By Monday, it was dominated by emergency diversions, including bird strike and engine vibration reports, plus Gatwick disruption.
  • BAE Systems: +7.8 to −2.0. Tuesday brought a $230M US Marine Corps contract and new systems shown at AUSA. Monday was split: a cyber incident said to have disrupted US bankruptcy courts weighed on reputation, while a counter-drone microwave system and a Challenger 3 trials milestone pulled the other way.
  • Centrica: +6.3 to −3.5. Tuesday's coverage covered a completed North Sea sale, analyst Buy ratings and a Sizewell B contract milestone. Monday centred on the East Yorkshire gas storage facility nearing closure while a government decision is awaited.
  • Lloyds Banking Group: +3.7 to −5.5. Tuesday leaned positive on a new CTO hire and a JPMorgan target increase. Monday was mainly RBC downgrading Lloyds and cutting its price target, citing deposit competition squeezing lending margins.

What it adds up to

The pattern is fairly plain. Coverage rewarded buybacks, dividends and contract wins, and it punished regulatory findings, downgrades and operational trouble. That fits last week's broad picture of modest positive tone, and this week's slide on Sunday and Monday shows how quickly that can thin out when a few large names turn.

How it works. Every morning an AI model reads the UK business news about each FTSE 100 company and scores how good or bad it is for the company, from −10 to +10. Pages update by about 07:45 UK time.

Not investment advice. MarketFrame rates the tone of news coverage. It is general information, not a recommendation to buy or sell anything. The scores are not share-price data or forecasts: a good score doesn't mean a share will rise, and a bad one doesn't mean it will fall.
